Rock and fossil collecting is both fun and a learning experience. The hills around Las Vegas, Nevada are full of Cambrian period fossils, from approximately 500 million years ago. Rocks and even meteorites can be found throughout the Las Vegas Valley area. A real adventure awaits those who take the time to get out and hunt them down. Millions of years ago, approximately 50 miles North of the Las Vegas Valley area, a large meteor struck the earth and pieces of that meteor can still be found along the hills and throughout the valley floor. Las Vegas is also a great place for viewing meteor showers, a few miles outside of Las Vegas Valley, the night sky darkens and spectacular astronomical sights can be seen clearly.
